Some Psychiatric Findings of Dropout Students in Medical College



Abstract
The authors studied the psychiatric observation abcut dropout students in the College of Medicine, pusan National University, during the fifteen year period from 1955 to 1970. he Some of the findings obtained were as follows;
1. There were 55(4%) students who dropped out for various reasons among 1,410 enrollment students.
2. Among the dropout students, the ratio between psychiatric dropout and non-psychiatric dropout was 41, 8: 58, 2.
3. Among the 23 psychiatric dropout students, there were 8 schizophrenics(34,8%), 14 character disorders(60,9%), and 1 suicidal case(4,3%). The picture of schizophrenics was paranoid type in all cases.
4. The reasons of 32 non-psychiatric dropout students were as follows; Transferred 11(34.3%), Learning difficulty 12(37.5%), Poor economic condition 5(15.6%), Marriage 2(6.3%), and Death due to physical illness 2(6.3%).
5. There was marked increasing tendency of numbers of dropout students for various reasons and the incidence of the non-psychiatric dropout was exceedingly predominant rather than the psychiatric dropout during the special enrollment period( 1955-1961 ), in comparison with the data obtained during the regular enrollment period(1962-1970).
6. In this study, the psychotic students revealed 5.7 per 1,000 students per year.
These findings described as above suggest that psychiatric disorder is indeed an important cause of the large numbers of medical students who terminate their college careers before graduation.
